ENGINEERS FOR EUROPE
FEANI in
collaboration with VDI (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure) organized a discussion on
the subject on 28 April 2010 at the
Stanhope hotel in Brussels.
The motivation for the event is
presented in detail in the FEANI News No. 6, which can be found also in the
section ‘FEANI News’ of this website. It can be resumed as follows: The
EU 2020 Strategy with its emphasis on Innovation can only succeed if Europe can
rely on enough engineers with good engineering education. More engineers in
Europe are essential to boost Innovation which has received top priority in the
EU 2020 Strategy.
The study (European Engineering Report) from the German Institut der Deutschen Wirtschaft however shows that this will not be the case unless efficient measures are taken NOW to reverse the present negative trend on professional engineers. The conclusions of the report are in line with other previous studies on the subject which are also documented in the FEANI News No. 6.
Considering that until now, besides general proposals, not enough concrete measures have been taken to reverse the trend on a short-time basis, the engineering professional organization FEANI and VDI have decided to investigate the setting of a European promotion campaign, involving the European media, for the education and profession of engineers with the objective of short-/medium-term benefits.
The objective of the event of 28.04. was to raise awareness on the subject among the members of the European Parliament and Commission and to discuss a proposal to launch in the media at European level a campaign to promote engineering studies and engineering careers with well-dedicated and well-targeted messages.
