in order to come up with a framework of actions to be taken at the European level.
It became clear from the presentations that the shortage of engineers is totally different from one country to another; from dramatic shortage today (Germany for instance) to serious concerns for the very near future. All speakers reported about campaigns underway or to come in their countries to attract young students in science and technological fields and there was a clear consensus that supporting actions to the National campaigns should be undertaken at European level.
Indeed, immediate actions on a European level were considered as a prerequisite to achieve the objectives of the ‘Lisbon Agenda’ of jobs and economic growth and to compete with USA, Asia, and Japan. The availability of sufficiently well educated/ trained professional engineers in multidisciplinary areas was clearly seen a key to the achievement of these objectives. Important factors such as ‘motivation’ (of children and students), ‘today’s image of the engineers’ and ‘encouragement of women in engineering’ was evoked in different contributions and would need to be addressed in European exchanges (‘best practice’) and actions on a European level. The Secretary General of FEANI in his final statement at the end of the Forum made clear that FEANI would see the discussions and results of the Forum as an impetus and a starting point to launch a joint European initiative.
FEANI thanks all speakers for
