The Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects, SIA, was founded in 1837. Today, it has over 11.000 members, all of them qualified engineers and architects (most of them graduates of the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology) from a total of 15 different branches : 38% are architects, 35% civil engineers and 27% from other engineering professions. 14 specialised groups devote themselves to interests specifically related to their subject.

In the framework of the Swiss Association of Standardization, SIA is responsible for the elaboration and publication of National Building Standards. Members of SIA are engaged in the Task Commissions and Working Groups of CEN, the European Committee for Standardization.
