1990 - 1992

 

Appointed as a graduate engineer to Smith, Brown and Jones, Consulting Engineers, as a member of a team working on the design of a new cable-stayed bridge over the River Tweed, with a clear span of  275m. Registered in the company’s training scheme and attended a courses on Health and Safety and Contract Management. Responsible for detaled design of cable connections and acted as checking engineer for tower foundation. Provided assistance with the preparation of contract documents.

 

1992 - 1994

 

Transferred to Bridge Corporation Ltd., the contractors for the River Tweed Bridge. Appointed as Assistant Site Engineer with initial responsibility for network planning and materials ordering, as well as site testing of concrete cubes and design of temporary falsework. Attendance at weekly progress meetings and acting as measurement engineer working with the Consultant’s Resident Engineer. Acted as Assistant Site Safety Officer and assisted witb preparation of the final account. Contract completed two months ahead of programme.

 

1994 - 1997

 

Returned to Smith Brown and Jones as Engineer with responsibility for a commission for Inspection of 27 bridges on the West Coast Main Line Railway. In charge of a team of three - one graduate assistant and two technician engineers. Attended course on railway safety requirements and established liaison arrangements with railway engineers and work programme including line possessions. Member of a large team working on design of £15m waste reduction plant. Research on protection of concrete from aggressive chemical attack. Completyed Initial Professional Development requirements for the Institution of Civil Engineers and attended Professional Review. Successful in being admitted as a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers as a Chartered Engineer.

 

1997 to date

 

Promoted to Senior Engineer with responsibility for one of the structural design groups     within the firm and a base team of six assistant engineers, Incorporated Engineers and Technicians. Currently working on a range of schemes including a major project for the design of extensions to Berkeley Nuclear Power Station. Member of Nuclear Industry Research Team on Power Station Developments
